From Sandal-Bearer to Ruler of Japan: The Rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Japan's most powerful man once carried another man's sandals.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was born to a humble, near-peasant family — yet he rose through Oda Nobunaga's service and, after Nobunaga's death, unified the whole country. In a society bound tightly by status, it was a nearly impossible climb.
Then, having reached the top, he pulled the ladder up. His famous 'sword hunt' disarmed the farmers and hardened the lines between classes, so that no second Hideyoshi could rise the way he had.
The man who broke the rules then wrote new ones to keep everyone else in place.
