How Hired Muscle Took Over Japan
The help took the house. After a brutal civil war, the warriors built a government of their own.

The Genpei War (1180–1185) set two great warrior clans against each other and ended in victory for Minamoto no Yoritomo.
Rather than simply serve the court, Yoritomo set up a warrior government at Kamakura — the first shogunate — with its own laws, land grants and loyalties. The emperor kept his title and his rituals; the shogun kept the real power.
For the first time, Japan was effectively run by and for the warrior class — a settlement that would shape the country for the next seven centuries.
