The Katana Was Not the Main Weapon
The katana is the icon. The bow, the spear and the gun did the work.
A wall of spears, bows and matchlocks; a single small sword at a hip.
Sengoku battles were decided by massed bows, long spears (yari) and, after 1543, matchlock guns by the thousand — used in coordinated formations, not lone duels.
The sword mattered for close emergencies, for status and for duels. But the image of a single swordsman cutting through an army is mostly later theatre and film.
The real battlefield was about drill, logistics and gunpowder — run by men in those magnificent helmets.
